Episode 36: iPod and Fries

This week we talk about privacy, anonymity, and cryptography on the internet, a bit about the outlandish “Catholics” out there, we discuss discernment houses and top it off with a healthy dose of music and news.

  • Lindsay

    Hey guys! I enjoy listening to y’all each week. You mix together a great show with news, faith, tech news, and music. I don’t miss a show. It is great to listen to while I do my grades for the week. (I am a third grade teacher.)
    I have to say I missed Deacon Chris this week leading the show. Josh needs to work on noticing how much he says the words “you know.” It got a bit excessive. Other than that, it was a great show!

  • Daniel

    Hey guys,
    Just listening to your show as I’m doing my Uni project on…. Cryptology!
    I’m writing a simulation of the enigma machine, among other ciphers.

    Enjoying the discussion, you mentioned that you didn’t think the CIA/FBI/NSA could crack these codes, how sure are you?

    Love the crazy-town news, & looking forward to the next show.

    Btw will you be coming down under for WYD next year?

    Big Fan,
    Daniel, Melbourne Australia

    Lindsay,

    Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, you can tell I was a little nervous. Usually I do hosting of things much better but since I had to live up to the stylings of Deacon Chris, I seemed to rely on crutch phrases as well as the few times I got tongue tied. I guess there’s only so much editing that Daniel could do!

    I would like to give my two cents about these “extremist” Catholics. I one day got a digest size magazine from place called the fatima
    center. I belive it is located somewhere in New York State. All what this magazine had in it was bashing everything that is going on in
    the church. From just scaning the articles (which weren’t that exciting by the way), one man was saying how he left the chuch due to
    reciving the body of Christ by hand and not by mouth. Personally, it is better to recieve it by mouth but due to many germs that are out
    there it safer to be safe than sorry. I am sure Christ truly understands that and wouldn’t feel insulted by any means. To continue with this
    place Fatima Center, They also were telling how televison sations such as EWTN was wrong with the people who are on their such as
    Mother Angelica and a few others. I don’t know where they get with saying such things about the church, but where does anyone see
    wrong today. That is all I have to say, Thanks for the wonderful Podcasts everyone is doing a terrific job! I will keep you all in my prayers

    God bless,

    Jimmy

    My first time listening….an interesting discussion, but I would say, too, that the “you knows” got to the level of a verbal tic and were very distracting. One speaker in particular, but everyone seemed to have the problem to some degree. Sometimes in a group discussion I think this becomes more pronounced as each speaker is trying to fill the space, to save his place, in a sense, and keep from being interrupted while he thinks. One technique you might try is to have a little nerf ball or something, and the person who “has the mike” holds it. No one else jumps in until he’s been given the ball. That way the speaker knows that he can have a second or two of silence if he needs it, and won’t be as likely to unconsciously fill the moment with a verbalization. Sounds a little silly, and you might be wrestling over the ball, but hey, we won’t see that! Obviously you want the sense of a spontaneous discussion, but since the constant “you knows” are making it difficult for some listeners to concentrate on what you are saying, you might try this for an episode or two.

    TJ. Thanks for the feedback. That technique would work if we were all in the same place doing the podcast together. That would be a little difficult since most of us have about 100 miles between us.

    hey gang, the retreat was very good. Archbishop Sheen and I got to be very close during my week in the swamplands of southwest Louisiana!

    @ Daniel:
    yeah. I’m sure the CIA already has the coded messages we’re sending on the sub-carrier of our podcast already. Drat!

    RE: WYD. If whatever parish where I’ll be assigned wants to strike up the fundraising, I’ll be pleased as punch to go. I’ve always wanted to visit Oz.

    @ Josh and the You Knows:
    hosting is hard work! It’s rather tough to keep your ear on the conversation, put in your two cents, and keep your eyes on what’s coming up! You did alright – but I think next time, I’m going to put together a remote shock device — it’s the equivalent of putting Tobasco on the tongue of a profanity-prone youngster :)
    Seriously though, Josh, thanks for filling in!

    @TJ
    I’d just be bouncing the ball at the screen. But then again, that shows how clear Skype can be on a good day. It seems like we’re sitting across from one another! Thanks for your input, though!

  • TJ

    That IS funny…I had no idea you guys were not together. The remote shocker, then, might be the only choice. But the next time you ARE together, play a game of Nerf football in my honor!

  • Roland

    Thanks for the links to the anti-popes. The “conclave” was one of the funniest, albeit heretical, things I’ve seen in a long time.

  • http://www.catholicunderground.com Deacon Chris

    @Roland:

    yeah, those crazy schismatics…

    @TJ
    you know, if I were any good at football, I might consider it. But, as it stands, I would never get to say anything if I had to catch or throw a ball!

  • Angela

    Hey, is there anyway to fix the text on the site so it doesn’t keep getting smaller? If you can read this thatn that would be spectacular… if not… well… I love the show!

    Angie

  • http://www.cybercatholics.com Joshua

    That’s a deacon Chris fix. The small text thing doesn’t happen in Firefox but happens in Internet Explorer. Since they don’t have Internet Explorer on their macs, I think we’re being discriminated against.

  • http://www.catholicunderground.com Deacon Chris

    yeah. I can’t quite figure it out….IE continues to not work with it.
