Episode 57: A Quorum on Tahini (and NyQuil)

In this episode, we discuss what we’re excited about with the new Leopard operating system for Mac, we talk about the Holy Land losing their Christian TV station, and we welcome back an old friend. Also, our picks of the week, our new audio backchat feature, and prayer requests for Joshua’s brother.

Hey it sure was nice hearing Danny K’s voice again. So happy to hear him back on CU. Take care now and God Bless.

Thanks for the kind mention today and I am still blushing. Your right about blog journalism. Even though I have been on the internet since 1995 I am quite surprised to be writing commentary. Though I am more surprised to even be Catholic in the first place.

One correction Spaces is not unlimited, you can have 16 virtual windows – though even for the geekiest geek that is plenty. I love the implementation of spaces and this is the first virtual window implementation that I will probably stay with. The Ctrl-Number key switching is so fast and responsive that it is greatly useful and being able to set what apps go to what window or to all windows is excellent.

The show asked about any Leopard/faith angles. Well Fr. Roderick did a video where he compared a clean install of Leopard to going to confession.

So far I pretty much really like Leopard and have a review up on my new Mac related blog.

Oh, that was mean. You tricked me into thinking that you would give us more information about CatholiCon and you didn’t! Oh cruel fate! Can we know anything? Pleeeaase? A month, perhaps? The state of the prospective location? I’d settle for the quadrant of the country and the general time of year at this point. That would at least give us a general idea of what to budget….

But of course I’ll keep listening no matter how much psychological torture you guys put me through, so keep us in the dark for now if you must. God bless!

hey guys…another great, if nyquil-impaired, podcast. Nice to hear Daniel’s chuckle once again. Fr. Chris, you persevered in strength. Three quick comments:
    1. Stop giving Fr. Ryan such a hard time about the music…I absolutely LOVE his musical picks. Would I pay money for them?…eh…
    2. I was blown away by mogulus. Whoa. Absolutely amazing, dare I say inspirational…to think you could have people in Iraq, Pakistan, anywhere in the world starting up citizen TV. The implications…of course, it always comes back to content, content, content.
    3. We are in the middle of a writer’s strike out here in LA (that’s Los Angeles, not Louisiana). I would ask for your prayers for a quick and just conclusion to this labor dispute.

    Thanks, gentlemen. Love the show.

yeah, sorry Peter! We've had trouble with our quadrant of the country….and I'd be open to suggestions. As far as time of year, we've been looking at spring. But, of course, this is all quite up in the air! Perhaps this sheds a little light…

“Spring” is an excellent time frame. If you had said “Fall” my life would have gotten a lot more complicated.

If your quadrant of the country is not working… why not try the North East? Come visit lovely Rochester, NY! Conveniently located between the South and, um, Canada. I remember when Fr. Corapi and Scott Hahn came here a year or so ago they were at the Dome Arena. 25,000 square feet with 2,164 permanent seats (i.e. bleachers) off to the sides it works for either lectures or booth-based conventions. It seats up to 4,700 people, so if folks are standing and walking around instead of sitting I imagine this might be around the right size (unless you’re dreaming bigger than I am!). There are also smaller rooms for Adoration, Confessions, and/or instructional classes. It’s 10 minutes from the Greater Rochester International Airport (that’s right, I said International) and there are a bunch of nearby hotels, motels, and eateries.

The Diocese of Rochester likes to be cutting-edge in technology, so I think I could sell the idea if you’re looking for the blessing of the local Ordinary (I’m Webmaster for the Diocese and work at the Chancellery Office, so I can use the contacts I have to try and help push this along).

Lest I oversell my case I’ll put it to rest here. If any of that sounds good let me know. (I assume you have my email, since I have to enter it on this form.) I’ll be happy to help in any way I can!

    God bless.

Did someone say GrowL? I can’t decide if I should be flattered, offended or paid… Maybe I could “borrow” the logo for a BBC t-shirt!

  • Jone

Oh yea, great to hear D.K. again! Do it again real soon!

OK guys I’m just getting around to listening to the cast this week (things have been very hectic). First and foremost, thanks for all of the prayers. You can see my blog at http://deigratia.cybercatholics.com for update. Secondly, I am not a Vista fan – I actually hate the OS and predict that it will go the wayside of Windows ME. I however do like XP for the most part and I am a big Linux fan. I am currently thinking of getting a new PC and trying to decide if I want to put XP or Linux on the thing. I like Mac for the most part even though I haven’t used the OS since Version 9. The only thing that really keeps me from switching over is I really don’t feel like rebuying all the software that I’ve accumulated over the years. I suspect this is a big problem for many PC users who are thinking about switching.

    Joshua,

With the Intel Macs that is really no longer a problem with Boot Camp built into Leopard you can always dual boot, but even better is VMWare’s Fusion which lets you run Windows on your Mac desktop. Parallels allows you to do the same, but I think Fusion is superior since it will use both cores of a dual core system and virtual machines have come a long way and run at almost native speeds. Plus you can always also run Linux as a virtual machine with no problem. Though I think it is rather cool that OSX is UNIX compliant and you can easily interact using Unix commands in the terminal.

Currently though I am using two machines with Synergy for mouse/keyboard sharing, but I have found I am using my Mac much more than my PC for the most part, except when coding in Visual Studio for work. But I can easily see in the future only having the Mac to do both.

I keep hearing about how easy it is to switch between Mac and XP using Bootcamp – just one problem – are you willing to cough up another $200 for a copy of XP to put on your Mac?

Great show – I’ve been listening for a couple of months now. Hopefully, I’ll remember to get more active in community.

  • http://www.catholicunderground.com Father Chris

yeah, luckily I’ve got an old copy of XP that’s been hanging around from the PC days!

Welcome to the family, Ed. We look forward to seeing you around!

  • http://www.cybercatholics.com Joshua LeBlanc

Well, that’s not exactly my issue so much Ed as I have plenty pf copies of XP around. Jeff, you’re solution doesn’t really solve the problem. I mean if you’re really going to switch to mac, then what’s the point of saying “Oh wait, I want to use photshop – let me reboot into XP.” In my opinion a dual boot really never works. One OS gets used most of the time and the other gets neglected. For example, the PC I’m tying this from now had XP Pro and Fedora Core 7 on a dual boot. Fedora never gets used because all my apps are in Windows. I think the same would happen if I migrated to Mac. All my apps would still be in Wiindows and how often would I use Mac OS X – never. Who really wants to be typing in skype and have Fr. Chris send you a file only to have to reboot to edit the darn thing. Seems I have no real solution at this point – especially when Dell’s new XPS 420 is so beautiful and filled with media goodness at almost half the price of a Mac and since Apple went intel, there’s really not that much hardware difference. In the end I’m not going to play fanboy either way because they’ve both got there’s good and bad with both – in the end I’m going to use what gets the job done and I’m not going to pay a small fortune if I don’t have to!
