Episode 59: ChristmasLent

In this episode, we talk ChristmasLent, prepping for Christ’s coming, our Orthodox bretheren dash into podcasting, as well as a good deal of backchat and our new ventures at cu. Enjoy!

Your right those two coadjutor bishops and myself were laughing at the automatic ordinary reference.

As for the Pope’s upcoming encyclical on faith I do wonder if he will be the first pope with a encyclical trilogy if he does the next one on faith.

This show was one of your best, especially with that great theological discussion on Christ the King. I do love the fact that the feast occurs so close to Blessed Miguel Pro’s memorial with his last words being “Viva Christo Rey.” Though this is no surprise since he died just two years after Pope Pius XI moved the feast and no doubt this is why the phrase was taken up in the first place.

Also another excellent discussion on the Orthodox. Though I must admit that the whole “first among equals” phrase seems to be to be a distinction without a difference. Now as for the Orthodox not having the Vatican II experience that so put the liturgy in flux, we need to remember that the Eastern Rite Catholic Church’s did go through Vatican II, but without any major reforms of their Missals as in the Latin Rite.

By the way the Zune update includes firmware for podcast for the first generations of Zunes. Not that I know that from experience, but heard that on one of Leo Laporte’s shows.

Hey Jeff, thanks for your comments

I feel like some cheesy graphics & star wars movie poster mockups will be in the works for the release of his trilogy… C.f. Yoda Pope.

Your point about the Eastern Catholics is well noted! I didn’t consider them, but they, too, were not connected to a “Spirit of Vatican II” type “Renewal”.

I’m not done listening to this episode, but so far…it’s the best episode yet! How do I ‘digg’ this episode?

  • http://www.catholicunderground.com/fatherryan Fr. Ryan

    Hello World.

Barb has asked a question that is very important to Fr. Chris… who Diggs himself a lot!

Hey Barb, to digg the show, you click under the yellow digg button on the main page which says “digg this”. To digg an episode, click on the yellow part of the button and you’ll be transported to our page at digg.com where all of the episodes are listed in reverse date order, you can then digg individual episodes.

Thanks for listening and for giving Fr. Chris (and us) a digital pat on the back

(Where’s the picture of Josh with his tongue in his cheek???)

Hey guys, this was the first episode of CU that I’ve listened to in it’s entirety, while I was pulling my all-nighter for the following day’s exam. Your show was quite entertaining I must say, and the discussion about the orthodox liturgies kinda made me want to go and visit one someday. Anyways, I thought your banter was fun to listen to – it reminded me of the banter that usually happens on the Hands and Feet Show podcast. Thanks for keeping me awake to study all night!!!

Oh yeah, and I’ll stay subscribed to CU!

I agree with Barb in Nebraska…. one of the best episodes… “enlightening” insights on what Advent really is. Thanks!!

What, you talk about ChristmasLent and Eastern Christians without any mention of the St. Philip’s Fast? Dude!

  • http://www.catholicunderground.com Father Chris

Stephen! Tell me more! I had no idea!

Well, the short and sweet version of it is that Eastern Christians (Catholic & Orthodox alike) traditionally participate in the St. Philip’s Fast to prepare themselves for Christ’s birth. The feast goes by the name that it does by merit of starting the day after the Feast of St. Philip. My understanding is that it used to be substantially more rigorous than it is today.
