Episode 61 [Remastered]: Does the Compass Always Point North?

In this special episode, we break from the usual format to speak with Pete Vere, JCL, a canon lawyer, artist, and father, and his in depth study of the books by Phillip Pullman and the new movie “The Golden Compass.”

SIGNIFICANT UPDATE: We’ve corrected the audio difficulty which was indeed caused by our sydication service. Uploading the file caused a file corruption which caused iTunes to misread the file. Enjoy now the remastered Episode 61! Sorry for any inconvenience and/or dashed dreams.

It should be fixed now. Your computer may have it cached but I checked and the new file is in place. You can try redownloading the episode from iTunes. If you have problems redownloading, try the suggestions offered on this site http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051204231158931&query=podcast%2Boption

Ahhh… I found that in the corrupted version, if I skipped to 12 minutes into the file, it plays without skipping a beat, but I miss those beats from 38 seconds until 12 minutes.

Personally, I think you guys did this intentionally so you would receive an influx of comments on your site.. *grin*

I heard Pete last week on Catholic Answers, but you guys also did a good interview with him.

SF author John C. Wright has been doing a great critique of the books from a plot prospective on his live journal blog. He read the books when he was still an atheist and even then he did not like the 2nd and 3rd book because the preachiness trumped the plot. He mentions multiple plot points that were never developed and how the characters don’t even follow the message he preaches in it.

For a book about questioning authority he finds it rather odd that they never question the golden compass and accept whatever it says without testing.

“So, if the Dust is all-wise, why is the God who arose from the Dust all-stupid? If, on the other hand, the Dust is a natural but unintelligent spirit force, why should anyone listen to it or follow its advice? If, on the gripping hand, the Dust is a self-aware being, or stream of beings, how do we know it did not go senile at about the same time God Almighty did, or earlier?”

Pullman the materialist somehow never really explains the Dust in his novels, but I think a fantasy adventure with daemons as a representation of the soul and as really Indian spirit-guides is a pretty lousy platform to promote materialism in the first place.

Though I think the dishonesty of Pullman is recent weeks should make even his fans mad. In previous years he was quoted when he was much more honest about his intentions in writing the stories. In recent weeks he has totally backed away from his previous comments so as to not damage the boxoffice. Though he might as well have been honest considering that the movie has been a major dud and New Line Cinema will not likely even recoup the money they spent making the film. Hopefully this will mean that the sequels will not be made, especially since the director has said that the sequels would be more faithful to the novels.

I want to thank you for this podcast. I did not want to give any money to the movement by going to the movie or buying the books. I have shared this podcast with all the people I know that can influence others about this movie, even the ones that would usually avoid a Catholic show. Thank you again for this very informative show!
